What are the causes of leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis is caused by animals such as rodents, which excrete leptospira in the urine contaminate the environment. The other animals are dogs , cattle & pigs . The important epidemiological risk factors are 1) environmental factors 2) occupational factors  3) recreational factors.

The most important environmental factor is rainfall & flooding during monsoon & wading through stagnant water contaminated by animal urine can cause the disease. The important occupational factor is in rural areas, where farmers come into contact with domestic animals. The recreational factors is ecotourism, where there is animal - human interface.

Leptospirosis is an important cause of acute fever & contributes to 15 - 20 % of all community acquired fever in the tropics & is common during monsoon months.
